Nerd Jeopardy! with Mary South and Teddy Wayne

Join me for an online version of my literary trivia game show, produced every Tuesday until I’m sued for copyright infringement.

It’s a book-centric gloss on the TV show, via zoom. (Here's a video of our first go-round.) The meeting ID for April 14th is 928-435-439. There’s a password to keep out the trolls; get it by signing up here. (Hint: the password is the writer of To The Lighthouse.)

Each week I’ll highlight authors with new books out. This week I’m thrilled to have Mary South, author of the debut short story collection You Will Never Be Forgotten, and Teddy Wayne, author most recently of the novel Apartment.

Mary South is a graduate of Northwestern University and the MFA program in fiction at Columbia University, where she was a chosen for a Henfield scholarship. For many years, she has worked with Diane Williams as an editor at the literary journal NOON. She is also a former intern in The New Yorker's fiction department and a Bread Loaf work-study fellow. Her writing has appeared in The BelieverThe CollagistConjunctionsElectric Literature, NewYorker.com, NOON, and Words Without Borders. The writer Maile Meloy awarded her story "Not Setsuko" an honorable mention in the Zoetrope: All Story fiction contest. She lives in New York.

Teddy Wayne is the author of LonerThe Love Song of Jonny Valentine, and Kapitoil. He is the winner of a Whiting Writers' Award and an NEA Creative Writing Fellowship as well as a finalist for the Young Lions Fiction Award, the PEN/Bingham Prize, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. He is a regular contributor to the New Yorker, the New York Times, and McSweeney's.

FAQ

How does this work? It's like "Jeopardy!" but with swearing and an inevitable technical mishap. You’ll join the zoom a few minutes before the start time and use the chat window to submit your answers (in the form of a question, of course). It works best on a laptop; mobile is good if you just want to watch.

Each round consists of five categories with five questions each. After two rounds the top three players advance to Final Jeopardy. The winner will receive our heartiest applause and temporary respect.

Can I bring friends? The more the merrier.

What if I can't make it? Literary Hub is posting a video of the game in their Virtual Book Channel, along with the clues and answers. Simply press play and yell at the screen. Alternatively, you can join next week's game. The best way to stay in the loop is by signing up here.
